Who is Moss Utilities? The Story Behind DFW’s Most Trusted Heavy Civil Contractor
At Moss Utilities, we are proud to be a leading underground utility contractor in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, offering trusted services for heavy civil construction. Our team has experience working with general contractors, developers, and municipalities throughout Northern Texas. Moss Utilities was founded in 2016 by Garrett Moss, and the company has been built on nearly a century of family history.
A Legacy a Century in the Making
Throughout the years, the Moss family has been heavily involved in the North Texas construction industry. Garrett Moss comes from a family with multiple generations of history in the industry, which is why he brought so much insight to the company’s founding.
Fifth generation isn’t just a marketing slogan…five generations of excellence have shaped the standards, relationships, and expectations that are brought to every project.
2016 — Starting With Nothing but a Name and a Standard
Moss Utilities’ history started when Garrett Moss founded the company in 2016 because he could see a gap in the DFW market. At the time, underground utility work was being done by contractors who treated it as a secondary service to other scopes. He launched Moss Utilities with a small team and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest quality standards every step of the way.
Garrett hired Parker Thane as the first employee. Over the years, Parker grew with the business and eventually became Chief Operating Officer. His trajectory is the perfect example that shows the core Moss value: internal growth is a central part of the plan.
From the beginning, Garrett Moss has been proactive about building relationships by earning trust with general contractors. This reputation was built by showing up and delivering consistently for every project. The reason Moss Utilities has been so successful is that we have always invested in relationships before focusing on volume.
2019 — The Crisis That Changed the Company
By 2019, Moss Utilities was experiencing explosive growth…but the rapid increase in revenue also exposed operational weaknesses. The company was moving so fast that the systems couldn’t keep up.
One of the most important lessons that changed everything was:
- “Revenue Does Not Equal Success”
Garrett and the team learned quickly that the top-line numbers don’t mean anything if you don’t have the infrastructure, culture, and processes to back everything up. In 2019, the company was forced to slow down and examine its operations. Then, we rebuilt with intention.
The result: Moss came out stronger than before. Our team developed better processes and improved leadership. These changes built the foundation that was needed to grow our company to what we are today.
What “The Moss Way” Actually Means
We have three pillars that make up “The Moss Way”: preconstruction, project management, and field operations. Each of these pillars are treated with equal weight.
“Moss Fuerte” (Moss Strong) is our internal standard for the culture that we are building and maintaining. This mindset affects how our crews show up and perform on every project. This mindset is reinforced through every level of our organization, from foreman to top management and every person in between.
We believe that “Blue Collar is Cool” and this viewpoint is the foundation of our people-first philosophy. At Moss Utilities, we actively invest in the dignity and development of trade workers and support internal growth for all of our team members.
Who is Moss Utilities: The Projects That Put Moss on the Map
Our projects speak for themselves. We’ve built a solid reputation through many notable projects over the years:
- Universal Kids Resort, Frisco: Utility contractor for DFW’s $550M theme park development.
- Firefly Park, Frisco: Underground infrastructure for one of North Texas’s most anticipated mixed-use developments.
- Walsh Ranch, Fort Worth: Deep utility work through Texas limestone on a large-scale master-planned community.
- Amazon Project Maverick, Cleburne: Utility infrastructure supporting a major e-commerce fulfillment facility.
- Data Centers Across DFW: Zero-tolerance precision work in one of the most demanding construction sectors.
- 20+ North Texas Schools: Community-critical projects where schedule and quality directly affect families.
The 2025 ESOP — When Employees Became Owners
In 2025, we brought new opportunities to our employees by establishing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This benefit gives each of our employees an ownership stake in Moss Utilities. Over time, employees accumulate shares; then, when they leave or retire, the company buys back those shares at fair market value.
At Moss Utilities, we chose the ESOP structure to make sure that the company’s values, culture, and standards would stand strong over the years. When employee ownership is offered, it aligns everything that is most important to us: when the company wins, the people who built it also win.
As a client, our ESOP ensures quality results for your project because you’re hiring a team that has a direct financial stake in the outcome. Our people aren’t only working for a paycheck.
