Role & Professional Background
As Vice President of Preconstruction, John oversees the critical “front end” of the business, leading the teams responsible for estimating, business development, and marketing. He ensures that the company not only secures the work that keeps the blue iron moving but also builds the relationships that sustain it.
John’s story is one of the most unique within the company. He didn’t start in a corner office; he started at the front desk. Joining Moss Utilities in its early days as a receptionist, John possessed a relentless curiosity and a “whatever it takes” attitude. He quickly transitioned into estimating, learning the complex language of underground utilities from the ground up. Through late nights and a commitment to self-education, he climbed the ranks from Estimating Coordinator to Chief Estimator, and finally to VP.
Driving Strategy & Growth
John’s role is pivotal in shaping the company’s future. He oversees Business Development and Marketing, bridging the gap between finding new opportunities and closing the deal. He understands that in today’s construction landscape, how you tell your story is just as important as how you build the work. By aligning the bid process with the brand message, he ensures that Moss Utilities is recognized not just for its pricing, but for its value, culture, and capabilities.
John has built a preconstruction culture rooted in trust and transparency. He believes that a bid is more than just a price tag—it’s a promise. By fostering deep partnerships with developers and general contractors, he ensures that Moss Utilities isn’t just winning jobs, but building a legacy of reliability before a single shovel hits the ground.
Red Raider Grit & Family Values
While the Moss leadership team has its share of Longhorns, John brings his own brand of tenacity from Texas Tech University. His background—ranging from early jobs at Chick-fil-A to the high-stakes world of utility estimating—has instilled in him a belief that hard work is the great equalizer.
Off the clock, John is a devoted father of three children. He understands that the work done at Moss Utilities supports not just the infrastructure of the city, but the families behind it—starting with his own. Today, John serves as the bridge between the blueprint and the build, ensuring that the “unseen grind” of the estimating, business development, and marketing teams translates into tangible success for the crews in the field.
